The Gentleman Halt At Spencer
Day 3 of our four day paddling trip on the Hawkesbury River.
We get off early today as we this is the longest leg of our trip and we are
going against the tide. The weather report indicated rain later on.
A beach is worth a stop on, especially when there are so few of them. Often it
is a thin veneer over soft viscous mud - a very pleasant feeling as it oozes
between your toes.
There was hardly a ripple on the water and only the occasional fishing vessel
nearer to Spencer. Monday sees all the recreational boats anchored or garaged
whilst everyone is at work.
There was not much in the way of beaches to stop at so we opportuned ourselves
upon the private pontoons along the way when rests were needed.
I can appreciate the beauty and song of birds, but needed an expert for the
one in the photo's identification. This lovely animal flitting in the
mangroves is an
azure kingfisher.
We arrive at Spencer at around 1pm with the intent to stock up and perhaps get
a coffee before camping at
Gentleman's
Halt:
famous because Governor Phillip camped there in 1789 when he explored the Hawkesbury river.

The burgers were delicious at the store. Apparently people travel out of their
way to eat here. The store manager being a country bloke at heart had plenty a
conversation available to keep us occupied whilst waiting for our food.
I looked at the sky and suggested to Livio that we stay at the caravan park.
Our host Donna offered us the bunk house for $25 per head and we readily
agreed. The heavens justified that decision with a massive cloud burst just as
we unloaded the kayaks. No gentleman this time were going to camp on the
shores over yonder today.
The bunk house served its purpose and even better as we were the only two. It
had a stove and fridge so we could drum up a good meal. A television was
available but useless in the driving rain.
This leg was our longest leg and Livio managed it without duress. It was just
right to keep us occupied for the day.
