Two good mates go for a multi day paddle on the Hawkesbury river, NSW.
The next four posts are about a kayaking trip I did with my friend Livio on
the Hawkesbury River from Portland at the mouth of the Colo River through to
Brooklyn in NSW. We had good weather and stayed in accommodation along the
river. A great fun trip, hopefully this will inspire others to do the same.
We leave early from my friend Livio's place to meet Bob from
Hawkesbury river kayaks
at 7:30am. It is like a reunion for us, as he remembers us from our
adventure
this time last year (see
link) . Bob is this time taking us to Portland at the mouth of the Colo river.
Our journey to the start sees us on the water at 11:00 am. Our delay due to a
need to support the community by getting some breakfast at a cafe in
Brooklyn.
Bob wishes us well and we paddle a couple of km upstream on the Colo to see
what we are missing- a lot but we know there is 25 km to cover before journey
end so a turnaround is mandatory!
Our starting point Skeleton rocks reserve is named after a reef known as the
skeletons in this area. Notes about this and the Hawkesbury are well
described in this fishing
article.
Although there are jetskis, waterskiers and power board of all descriptions
on the river they were well behaved and there did not seem to be a great
deal on the river. The waterski parks are useful spots to land and rest as
there are few alternatives.
The MacDonald river is easy to locate as it is a tributary to the Hawkesbury
located between the two ferries at Webb creek and Wiseman's.
About 5km up river we find the sophisticated purple balloon markers indicating
the correct location of our accommodation - DC Hawkesbury getaway. I found
this place using
Stayz.
Corinne our host was very friendly and had many a tale to tell. Livio"s wife
joined us soon after we arrived.
The place had an impressive outdoor cooking area and a cinema screen to keep
us entertained at night.
A good days paddling and comfortable place to stay, what more can we ask for ?
The plan:
